Maritime Commerce Strategic Outlook

Maritime commerce is the lifeblood of the global economy and America is open for business. 

The U.S. Coast Guard has the enduring responsibility to safeguard the U.S. Marine Transportation System (MTS) and enable the uninterrupted flow of maritime commerce. 

The U.S. MTS includes:

- 90% percent of U.S. imports entering and exports exiting by ship

- $4.6 trillion in economic acitivity

- 23 million U.S. jobs sustained

- 95,000 miles of shoreline

- 25,000 miles of navigable waterways

- 361 ports

- 20,000 bridges
