Mobility and Ice Operations Division (CG-WWM-3)

Missions:

Polar Icebreaking - Directs all external stakeholder outreach and engagement related to Polar Icebreakers, including coordinating Coast Guard activities with the National Science Foundation and other science agencies using our Icebreakers for research, and developing funding and policy for Congressional approval.

International Ice Patrol - The International Ice Patrol monitors iceberg danger near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and provides the iceberg limit to the maritime community. As program manager, we develop policies and coordinate Coast Guard support and with national agencies, foreign countries and international bodies such as the International Maritime Organization.

Domestic Icebreaking - The Coast Guard is the only federal agency directed to operate and maintain icebreaking resources for the United States. This includes establishing and maintaining tracks for critical waterways, assisting and escorting vessels beset or stranded in ice, and removing navigational hazards created by ice in navigable waterways. Domestic Icebreaking ensures these objectives are met throughout the winter ice season.
