FINDINGS OF CONCERN: The purpose of findings of concern is to disseminate information related to unsafe conditions to the public, state, or local agencies. Findings of concern highlight conditions that were identified as causal factors in a casualty and could contribute to future incidents, but where formal action by the Coast Guard is not desirable, cost beneficial, or not within agency purview or authority. Findings of concern are intended to educate the public, state, or local agencies about the conditions discovered through the investigation so they may address the findings with an appropriate voluntary action or highlight existing applicable company policies or state/local regulations. Findings of concern are similar to safety alerts, with the exception that the need to issue findings of concern is not considered urgent.
